Scripture (3 Minutes)

Psalm 18:1–3, 30–36 (NLT)

Psalm 18:1–3 (NLT)
I love you, Lord;
you are my strength.
The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior;
my God is my rock, in whom I find protection.
He is my shield, the power that saves me,
and my place of safety.
I called on the Lord, who is worthy of praise,
and he saved me from my enemies.

God’s way is perfect.
All the Lord’s promises prove true.
He is a shield for all who look to him for protection.
For who is God except the Lord?
Who but our God is a solid rock?
God arms me with strength,
and he makes my way perfect.
He makes me as surefooted as a deer,
enabling me to stand on mountain heights.
He trains my hands for battle;
he strengthens my arm to draw a bronze bow.
You have given me your shield of victory.
Your right hand supports me;
your help has made me great.
You have made a wide path for my feet
to keep them from slipping.

Discussion (5-10 Minutes)

You can lead through a teaching or use the following questions to start a discussion:
  • What did you learn in this psalm about God’s reliability?
  • Why do you think this psalm compares God to a rock?
  • If you had to describe God using something from nature (like how David used a rock), what would you pick and why?
  • We all know nobody's perfect—except God. How does that take the pressure off when you're trying to figure life out?

Closing Prayer (3 Minutes)

From Psalm 89:1–2, 8.
Lord, your love stands firm forever. I will sing of your great love forever; I will make your faithfulness known through all generations. O Lord God Almighty, who is like you? You are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
